An Introductory Guide to Technical Mortars

Technical mortars are multipurpose additives. They are specifically used to improve the performance and strength of concrete. Concrete structures are not truly impermeable. They have a few demerits, albeit outweighed by their merits. Technical mortars possess considerable flexural strength and thus are effective at preventing cracks. You may choose to use such additives for outdoor and indoor installations.

There are many types of technical mortars, each with distinct attributes and similar properties. Some additives are more effective at reducing cracks and shrinkages. These additives are usually stronger. Some variants are better at damp proofing and waterproofing. These are acrylic emulsions that can be used as a kind of cement slurry and applied as a coat. Other variants include a primer that facilitates bonding and is water resistant. It is used before levelling compounds or adhesive mortars are used.

You can use technical mortars on existing substrates. Such an application will make the surface resistant to impact, abrasion and chemicals. Shrinkages that exist already will be reduced and further vulnerability will be limited. The cast is not that heavy so there is no unnecessary load on the substrates. Such mortars are usually slip resistant. The multipurpose additive can be used for mortar or concrete mix. It does not contain any toxins. Existing substrate is better bonded as a result. Some variants of such mortars are also suitable for ceramic tiles, wooden boards, asphalt, gypsum boards, parquet floors and acrylic paints. You can use them for vinyl tiles and glazed tiles too.

You must choose a credible brand or manufacturer of technical mortars. Your choice should be influenced by the type of surface you have, its age and present condition, the issues that may have already cropped up or remedied in the past and the use of the particular surface. A driveway, parkway or parking lot has to endure a different kind of traffic and hence load compared to a pavement. Residential settings have to endure much less but there are aesthetic preferences and other priorities.

Technical mortars should ideally be handled by professionals. You may plan a do it yourself project but it is best to let the experts attend to every facet of the application. This also allows property owners to bestow full accountability on the applicator and the company that has manufactured the product. Self application may be replete with minor errors and it is a relatively daunting task if someone has no prior experience of dealing with such mortars.
